Summary: |
The author wrote the biography of Haiti's hero, Toussaint L'Ouverture, who led the fight for liberation from France and Spain, to accompany Jacob Lawrence's paintings. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The book can be used with text sets on slavery and about Jacob Lawrence. It would work especially well with From Slave Ship to Freedom Road, another pictorial history. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement might make a good comparison/contrast with Toussaint L'Ouverture. The relationship between the text and illustrations would be an interesting reason to reread the book. A timeline of important events in his life, perhaps crossed with what was happening in the rest of the world, may be of interest.
Since Haiti still struggles for its independence from larger powers and from poverty, students could research online, in newspaper archives, and libraries for current information about Haiti. There are many web sites featuring information about Jacob Lawrence including these: www.jacoblawrence.org/, encarta.msn.com/find/Concise.asp?ti=0035/B000, and www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Classroom/9912/toussaint.html. |
