Summary:
This is the true, if somewhat fictionalized, story of a librarian in Iowa who befriends Tomas, a migrant child from Texas. Tomas discovers the world of books and the librarian learns some Spanish phrases. The author includes a note at the end of the book about the adult life of the real Tomas.

Teaching Ideas:
This book works well in text sets about migrants or literacy. Teachers will want to use general and open response strategies to generate discussion and writing. In particular, students may want to explore the characteristics of adults who interact well with children or people in the community who have had an impact on others. Using the information in the author's note, students might want to research the life of Tomas Rivera.
