The author-illustrator returns to his father's home as an adult to learn the contents of a mysterious red box that his father had brought back from Tibet years before. The past is revealed through a diary, memories, and extraordinary illustrations. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The structure of the book may be difficult for some students. To tell the story, the author uses his father's diary accounts of a misadventure in Tibet and his own memories of the stories his father told upon his return home. The author's statement, "It is a Tibet I have never been to, and it may be a Tibet that never really existed" could be used to explore truth, dreams, and memory. Creating a timeline may help determine what really happened. The suggestive illustrations provide ample opportunities for exploring Asian cultures and religion. Teachers could also use with books illustrated by Ed Young.
