Summary: |
Biographies of ten powerful queens from the 5th Century B.C. to 18th Century Russia are accompanied by beautiful illustrations, historical maps, and excerpts from historical documents. The essays are supplemented with a preface, a bibliography, an index, and a note on sources. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Learners may find a matrix useful to record important information on each queen i.e. time/reign of power, location, age of accession, marital status, accomplishments, what made them powerful etc. Students could then use the chart for comparison and contrast activities. The Note on Sources discusses the limitations involved in reconstructing early history from few artifacts and records. The book lends itself to then-and-now map work using the historical maps with a current atlas. Excerpts of particular women would supplement the study of periods of history. Students may want to discuss or write about what modern women leaders might be added (though not technically queens).
