Summary:
The book recounts both the story of Harriet Powers during the century of the Civil War and the story of her two "story quilts" that now reside in museums. The book is illustrated with photographs of Bible stories from the quilts with explanatory captions in Harriet's own words and with comparative photographs of contemporary quilts of African tales from Benin and Dahomey. A selected bibliography is included.

Teaching Ideas:
