The story of Blanche Leathers, the country's first female steamboat captain, sailing on the Mississippi River.

Teaching Ideas:
Use Google maps and images to see the areas of the Mississippi that Blanche sailed. Write a diary/journal to describe her emotions as she longed to be a captain as a child and as she prepared as an adult. Students could resesarch other female trail blazers by using the "Women in History" thematic collection. Students could also write a letter to Blanche or another famous woman.
