Summary:
During the Civil War, Maddie, an eleven-year-old house slave, journeys with her mistress to Nags Head near Roanoke Island which has become a Yankee-protected community for run-away slaves. Maddie grows up there with her family and finds a place for herself in a rapidly changing world. The book is based on a little-known episode in American history.

Teaching Ideas:
A character study of Maddie might interest students. The different points of view about risk-taking, leaving, or staying offer opportunities for comparison/contrast activities. Also comparison and contrast of the family relationships would highlight issues of the book, i.e., mother/daughter, father/daughter, father/mother. If used with other Civil War books, students could develop a timeline of the events of the plot and the major events of the War. www.civilwar.ocm
