Summary:
Excerpts from 12 oral histories from former slaves, gathered during the Depression by WPA workers, provide several perspectives about slave life as remembered by the people interviewed, who were in their 80s and 90s at the time of the interviews.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers will want to read (or ask students to read) the introduction, which explains the WPA and provides insights into the ways these stories were collected. The stories could be compared to fictional accounts of slavery (e.g., Christmas in the Big House...). Writing or discussion about how people remember their childhoods might prove interesting. Students may be interested in locating the areas where these people lived on maps. Students could use point of view guides to compare the points of view of two different slaves. Searching Yahooligans for "slavery" will yield other slave narratives online.
