Summary: |
This book is part of the "Lifeway Series," which also includes titles called The Cherokee, The Iroquois, and The Navajo. This title examines the origins, history, culture, beliefs, and language of the Native American tribe the Sioux (also called Dakota and Lakota). Photographs by the author and by Edward Curtis, brief biographies, a timeline, a glossary, a bibliography, a list of WWW sites, contact information for Sioux organizations, and an index expand the uses of the book. |
Teaching Ideas: |
All of the end matter, as well as the few maps included, could be the focus of study skills work. Teachers should be sure to note the extensive list of WWW sites and the fact that one of the people described in the biographies, Russell Means, has Cleveland connections. This would be an excellent addition to inquiry into "culture." Along with other books that describe cultures, learners might compare and contrast, perhaps by completing a matrix, issues such as family, education, coming-of-age, rituals, and many more. Using the web sites give, students could research more information on present day life of the Sioux and do a then-and-now historical comparison. The book could be paired with Indian School or used in a text set on Native American myths and legends with Coyote Makes Man, First Strawberries, and Last Leaf, First Snowflake to Fall. Learners may be interested in obtaining more information by contacting one or more of the organizations listed in the Appendix |
