Readers might find making a timeline of the events of Freud's life helpful in tracking shifts in Freud's thinking. They could then develop a list of the 'basics' of Freud's beliefs and then look for bits of his own life story to speculate on their origin. Summarizing the history of the study of the mind in the introductory chapter might help readers distinguish between the physical exploration of the anatomical brain and the study of the "emotional brain" that couldn't be seen nor touched.
