Teaching Ideas:
Use as copy change for readers to utilize their own family history. The same family history could be used to create charts or family trees. Students will want to talk about other intergenerational skills and habits and the role of 'elders' in passing information, values, and habits on to the next generation. Quilting offers opportunities to expand the text. Use the book in a text set on quilting. Students can research the quilting symbols used as a mapping device in the Underground Railroad and then design a quilt or a square for a class quilt.
