Students may find that creating a matrix with categories for work, play, family, environment etc. will help document the memorable details in the book. The book could be used to introduce a unit on the Depression or on family history. Students may want to discuss and find examples of how the daughter captures her mother's "voice" and unique vocabulary. This story contains many topics for discussion and writing--the value of large families, getting through hard times, the effects of divorce, and the value of education.
