Summary:
This must-have addition to a Civil War collection weaves together stories of slave women, abolitionists, women's rights leaders, and famous and not-so-famous women to offer a look at women's experiences during the Civil War. Diaries and letters are frequently excerpted, and vintage photographs illustrate the volume.

Teaching Ideas:
Reading Group members found this an eye-opening book; we learned a lot, and other readers will too. Most expository text strategies will work well. Short "boxed" bits of text, which would be useful for strategy teaching, are included among longer chapters. Portions of the book are easily excerpted for use with other units (e.g., Harriet Tubman, women's rights, family life). Students may want to follow up by researching women's roles in other times.
