Summary:
In this fictionalized story of real people, Salai, servant of Leonardo da Vinci, tells how the painting of Mrs. Gioconda known as the Mona Lisa came to be painted.

Teaching Ideas:
This book joins a small text set on the artist and scientist that can be accessed on the Eureka database using the keyword da Vinci, Leonardo. Teachers may want to read the first few pages aloud and, perhaps, encourage readers to use the text set and Internet searches to learn more about Leonardo's horse, the notebooks, his scientific thinking and experimentation, and the Mona Lisa. Since the three main characters are so vividly drawn, readers might compare and contrast Leonardo, Salai, and Mrs. Giacondo to see how and why they compliment each other. Readers will want to discuss what the book reveals about the levels of society in Renaissance Italy and about the creative process.
