Summary: |
Angel and her little brother Bernie are dropped off at their great-grandma's house. Dad is in jail, and mom is an alcoholic and selfishly unable to be a mother. Together, the new family learns to live together in the crumbling Vermont farmhouse. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This is a wonderful story about family and extended family. Angel's character is especially interesting; she has to be Bernie's mother, a role she occasionally finds very difficult. Students may want to do a character sketch for Angel. They may also want to explore the characteristics of children of alcoholics and think about Angel and Bernie in light of what they learn. How characters learn to trust enough to develop relationships is also worthy of discussion/ writing. Students may want to search online to find the full text of Robert Frost's poem that supplies the title and discuss its relevance. |
