A poor boy from Korea desperately wants an education. He listens outside the school door for awhile and is eventually allowed to attend school to prepare for The Royal Bee, a national test of students' knowledge.

Teaching Ideas:
Issues related to class and opportunity are raised in this book. Learners may become interested in the Korean culture. Barriers to goal achievement, including getting an education, might prove interesting for discussion or writing. Students may be interested in writing narratives about friends or family members who succeeded "against all odds."
