Summary:
This carefully researched book tells the story of the millions of women who worked in factories during WW II, how they got there, and how they were persuaded to return home after the war was over. The volume is illustrated with archival photographs and copies of posters and advertisements.

Teaching Ideas:
Students might be interested in exploring whether the war is, in some way, a root of feminism. Lots of other discussion and writing possibilities also exist. For example, students may want to do an interview project in which they talk with women who worked in the factories during the war and were then let go: What did they do? How did they feel? Students may also wish to compare issues related to women in the workplace during WW II and now. Attitudes, social mores, and propaganda are other topics for discussion or writing. Bleich's Heuristic would work well with the last chapter. Lots of the text lends itself to Agree, Disagree, Why? as well.
