For all geography enthusiasts, this book recounts the history of mapmaking with biographies of famous mapmakers, fact boxes of specific scientific information, and beautiful maps. The author provides an index and suggested reading list.

Teaching Ideas:
Chapters can be used with other books in text sets on longitude, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and explorers. The book offers so much information that using a "jigsaw" technique could easily be used. In preparation for discussion or writing, students might want to compare the maps in The Longitude Prize, Starry Messenger, Tibet Through the Red Box, City of Angels, Scrambled States of America, A Street Through Time, Journeys in Time, and Places in Time in light of the author's statement: "They (maps) create the sense that there are routes from Here to There (even if There is in outer space or our own imaginations). They are another way that we can tell stories." Learners can then try their hand at drawing a map of ther neighborhood that will tell a story. Math activities can be developed around the theodolite.
