Summary: |
In Albuquerque, 7th grade students decide to write a book on their diverse heritage to raise money for the school. As they research traditions and family stories, they learn unexpected things about themselves. Chapters alternate between stories about the 15 students and the story that each writes as a contribution to the class book. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Most chapters could stand alone as models for discussing or writing about family history. Response activities like DR-TA, Think-Pair-Share would work well. Students interested in the linked story structure might be interested in Seed Folks and In Nueva York. The description of the experimental school in Children of the Dust Bowl and the project described in this book suggest methods of teaching that involve students in meaningful ways which might lead to discussion of what really interests students. |
