Teaching Ideas:
Teachers will want to read the poems first before using them in class because they are uneven in quality. Indivudual poems about events and people highlighted in this book can be supplemented by numerous books in the OLRC Recommended Trade Books database. Students might want to discuss whether poetry or expository writing conveys the events or personalities better. What are strengths and weaknesses of each mode? Readers can discuss/write about what the "bridge" of the title and the opening and closing poems refers to?
