Summary: |
With the help of adult friends, eleven-year-old Sam Webber adjusts to the disappearance of his father and the reduced circumstances of life in Baltimore. Although the story is told from Sam's perspective, every reader can identify with the ultimately upbeat portrayal of depression. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The book is long but very engaging. There are so many topics to discuss. Why do fiction figure and comics attract Sam? The descriptions of Baltimore are worth studying, especially for the metaphors that reflect Sam's inner world. Students may want to discuss the description of the apartment and how it changes as Sam grows into his new life. There are many possibilities for comparing and contrasting the adults in Sam's life. Although school is a backdrop for some of the story, students could write a description from the fragments that appear. Is it realistic? How does the school help Sam? Fail Sam? Any predictive strategy like DR-TA would work well since the book ends ambiguously without all threads tied. |
