Summary:
A son retells the story of his father, a deaf printer working in a newspaper plant in the 1940's who used sugn language to save his co-workers from a fire. In addition, the author gives biographical information about his father who was the model for the main character. Also included are directions for making a printer's hat from newspaper.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers may want to use the book in a unit on working conditions and types of jobs through recent history. The book is a good introduction to the subject of disabilities and how relationships, education, and work are affected by handicaps. Teachers may want to use a K-W-L strategy to generate questions for research and writing.
