Summary:
This graphic novel of a family of lions liberated from the Baghdad zoo by U.S. bombing raids provides a symbolic understanding of the war from the dangers they encounter.

Teaching Ideas:
The book offers an opportunity--beginning with the title--to study the use of an extended metaphor on freedom. Teachers may want to begin with a K-W-L strategy about what students already know about Baghdad--history (recent and ancient), monuments, statues etc.--using maps to locate it. Since this is based on a true story, readers may want to consider what was gained by telling the story from the lions' point of view. Google searches provide illustrations of the sculpture of the "Lion of Babylon" and about the real story of the "lions of Baghdad."
