This very readable biography tells the life story of Jesse Owens, the 1936 Olympic star, and the prejudice he combated throughout his life. The book ends with a page of notes and a page of dates.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers may ask students to read each page carefully and create a time line for Owens' life, and when they've finished, to check their work against the last page of the book. This book would fit well into several different units: U.S. 20th-century history (especially in connection with Hitler), African-American heroes, Ohio history, sports, people who take risks. Students may want to write essays about the experience of feeling rejected and of being the outsider. Teachers might want to look at Adler's many other biographies. www.coins.nd.edu/~pworland/org/owens.htm
