Summary:
A young Italian immigrant boy has to find a job lighting the lamps to help support his invalid father and many sisters. His proud father thinks it is inferior work until the night the boy refuses to light the lamps, and his little sister does not return home because of the dark.

Teaching Ideas:
This story would be especially appropriate for students who have their own immigration story to tell or write or who've also supported a family. This book could be part of a unit on immigration, on New York City (and geography), or on the importance of work. Students might choose to write a story from the point of view of the father or one of the sisters or may want to discuss parents' goals for their children. For additional family history books, see the Family History Matrix.
