Summary: |
Approximately 1500 people, most children, live in a dump at the center of Guatemala City. In 1991 Nancy McGirr began a photography project with about 2 dozen children. She provided cameras; the children photographed their world. In 1993 Kris Franklin began helping the children write. This book is one result of these efforts. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This book would work well in units about children and hardship, resiliency, rural vs. urban life, or Latin America. Students might want to construct the children's culture by examining the photos and reading the children's writing (e.g., how do they work? what family customs?). Learners may want to develop a similar project using their own communities or neighborhoods as the focus. Disposable cameras would be useful for this purpose. |
