Summary: |
Illustrated with colored photographs, the book explores the world's major religions--Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Confucianism, and Taoism. The origins, forms of worship, traditions, sacred writings, and major holidays are described. Maps, a timeline, a glossary of terms, and an index are included. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The organization of the book lends itself to strategies for comparison and contrast of religions. Using an agreed-upon set of categories, small groups could each take one of the religions to research and add to a matrix. The categories could be those mentioned in the summary section or originate from concepts such as attitudes toward others, finding inner peace, etc. generated by students. Using the statistics given for numbers of people practicing the different religions, students could figure fractions and percentages.
