Summary:
Most of the book is transcripts of interviews children conducted with people who were involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Several essays that provide a chronology of African-American life and a foreword by Rosa Parks complement the interviews.

Teaching Ideas:
In addition to its uses in the study of the Civil Rights Movement, African-American (or U.S.) history, and related issues, the book may spark an interest in oral history. Teachers may want to introduce the "Important Events" list [at the end of the book] as an advanced organizer for students.
