Summary: |
Lucy Spencer and her Ohio farm family are involved in the Underground Railroad in 1851, a time when The Fugitive Slave Act levied severe punishment and fines for harboring runaway slaves. Lucy makes a courageous decision that changes her life and that of her family. The narrative is told through letters and journal entries. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Learners in Northeast Ohio will recognize the towns on the Underground Railroad-- Ravenna, Cleveland, Hudson, and Canton--and be able to follow Jeremiah's and Lucy's trips on a map. In a text set on the Underground Railroad, this book adds a realistic though fictional account of the risks involved in participation. It could also be used in a text set on literacy in difficult situations with Night John, Jubilee Summer, Silent Thunder, and I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly. Because community life is very well portrayed through the characters and their work, students might enjoy writing a description of the rural community and its conflicts--religious, political, and economic. Since many families enter the story, students could compare and contrast the families of Lucy, Jeremiah, Miss Aurelia, Jonathan, and Cass. |
