Summary: |
This biography of little-known scientist Nikola Tesla recounts his life and work on harnessing and advocating for alternating-current electricity with its many engineering applications that we take for granted. Archival photographs illustrate the text. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Readers may want to keep a reading journal of Tesla's characteristics in preparation for discussion or writing on how these traits helped and/or hindered his career. The journal might also include listing Tesla's inventions, many of which were attributed to others. Students will want to explore the controversy between Thomas Edison and Tesla and try to explain why Edison is associated with electricity and Tesla is unknown. As an extension of reading, students may want to debate the importance of finding a balance between work and relaxation, using Tesla's life as an example. If teachers are willing to sort through the advertising, there are many hands-on electricity experiments available online (try keywords such as "electricity, experiments, easy"). |
