Summary:
Published by the U. S. National Holocaust Museum, this history documents the manipulation of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin by Hitler and the Nazi party and presents the controversy of whether to participate or not on the part of nations and individuals. Archival photographs, memorabilia and biographies illustrate the well-researched events. The book includes a chronology of Olympic events, a chart of Olympic dates and locations, the 1936 participating teams, a suggested reading list, and an extensive index.

Teaching Ideas:
This is a fascinating presentation of painful historical information made more accessible and real by photographs. The chronology at the end of the book may be a good place to begin reading. Teachers will want to use strategies that accommodate divergent opinions such as Discussion Web or (Write and Share)2. Students might imagine that they are a U.S. or German Jewish Olympic athlete and keep a journal of their feelings as they read the book. Teachers will most likely excerpt sections to use with other WW II material. Students might also like to compare the Olympic Committee then and now since the Committee was in the news about the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
