Summary:
Set in modern day Rhode Island, this novel tells the story of two sisters: Kate, the elder sister, has a rare form of leukemia and Anna, the younger sister, was conceived as a bone marrow donor for her sister. This book deals with medical and moral ethics and does contain some obscene language.

Teaching Ideas:
Since this is a long (but fast moving) book, readers could keep a journal of character development as they read. Because the narrative depends on various perspectives, readers might want to tell a particular section from a different character's point of view. Students can debate the ethics of conception for medical ends as they read and discuss this book. They may also want to explore the issue of the justice-system safeguards for children. Students can write alternative endings for the story as there are many different ways it could work out. Why did the author choose to end the novel as she did?
