Summary:
Portraits of native American, Africans, and people of mixed race--both images and brief biographies--present a less well-known history of the American West. A Note on Sources and Further Reading and an index promote classroom use. The unusual illustrations are interesting in their own right.

Teaching Ideas:
The book encourages comparison and contrast activities for discussion and writing, perhaps using a matrix. Students should be encouraged to search the Internet for more information about favorite heroes and heroines. Here are a few: (www.desertusa.com/mzm/index.html); (www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part3/3h326.html); (members.tripod.com/~HFester/lokota.html); (www.incwel.com/Biographies/SittingBull.html);and (www.famoustexans.com/billpickett.htm). The artwork with its use of words and image invites discussion about what the illustrator accomplishes by using both.
