Summary:
Based on the author's great aunt, Arizona was born in a log cabin. All her life she dreamed of visiting far-away places. She became a teacher and never left the area, but taught several generations of children to share her dreams.

Teaching Ideas:
Readers might want to write a biopoem or a reflection on a special teacher from their own pasts or stories based on their own families. Students can compare and contrast their own schools to the school talked about in the book. Students can research Appalachia to see how education has changed in the mountains over time. This book could be paired with Uncle Jed's Barbarshop to explore the subject of deferred dreams.
