Summary:
The author tells the story of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. as a dream with King as a young boy suffering the injustices of segregation. Her strong paintings, more somber than her usual colorful quilt-like illustrations, give a solidity to the dream metaphor. A timeline and a biography are included.

Teaching Ideas:
The book can be used effectively in several text sets of Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Rights, heroes, and so on. Writing and discussion possibilities follow from the questions, What makes a hero? Was Martin Luther King a hero? Why? Students might want to find out more about Gandhi and how he influenced King. Students who are especially interested in the illustrations could compare and contrast Ringgold's many books including Tar Beach.
