Summary: |
16-year-old Steve Harmon is on trial for murder. This riveting book tells his story in the form of his journals and a film script he is writing. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The screenplay format begs for dramatization. The journal entries balance the voices of other characters with the strong personal voice of the teen protagonist. Students may want to make a list of the film abbreviations used. Teachers and students may want to explore the author's craft-- why would Myers use script and journals to tell Steve's story? Lots here for discussion/ writing as well: peer influence, gangs, doing the right thing, righting wrongs, etc. Most teaching strategies that focus on opinions/ evaluations will work well. |
