Summary:
This is a novel in play form. Courtney, 16 and paralyzed, learns about the power of the mind from an elderly blind woman and a game they play--taking an imaginary trip to Italy using a 1910 Baedeker's guidebook.

Teaching Ideas:
Making a timeline of the events may help readers put the disjointed plot together. Learners may want to keep a journal or discuss how (and perhaps why) Courtney changes over the course of the book. They may also want to focus on the relationship between Courtney and Elva. Adjusting to life-altering changes and the value of intergenerational relationships are other possible topics for discussion or writing. Stylistically, learners may want to explore why the author chose to write the book as a dramatic narrative or why he chose to include May as a character. And, of course, portions of the text will lend themselves well to Readers' Theater. The imaginary travel destinations provide ample opportunity to do map work.
