Summary: |
This is a collection of modern day short stories and poems about Africa. It has three divisions: 1) Africa 2) Americans in Africa 3) Africans in America. Although most of the 12 stories are engaging, teachers will want to read beforehand since some may be too childish for their students. The stories are also told from multiple perspectives - adolescent, young adult, and adult. Each contains rich language and a beautiful, personal story. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Students can compare the various stories--Americans in Africa and Africans in America --to see how the lives are lived different and the same.
The same can be done with the different cultures in the books. After reading the stories, students can write their own short stories or poems about their own cultures. |
