Based on an unpublished memoir, this picture book tells the story of daily life for a middle-class African American girl in New York in the 19th century. Maps and photographs illustrate the story.

Teaching Ideas:
Readers will benefit from map work in conjunction with the text. A then-and-now comparison of New York City would aid learners in focusing on the author's use of what Maritcha "would have" done. This, in turn, might lead to a discussion of whether projecting an historical figure into the present is an appropriate device for historical biographies.
