Teaching Ideas:
Some Reading Group members were concerned about the less-than-stellar writing style, but Floyd Cooper's illustrations and the importance of the topic make it a good choice for use. Teachers might supplement with newspaper and magazine articles. Students may also want to identify and then write about defining moments in Mandela's life. Class discussions about how to select episodes from a long life to include in a biography might enhance the writing curriculum. Students may want to discuss what Mandela learned from his father or how parents instill values in their children. www.africa.com
