Summary:
Subtitled "A Novel in Stories," this is a book about Joey and Mary Alice, who leave their home in Chicago each summer during the Depression to spend a week with Grandma Dowdel, who lives in a very small downstate town and who is, to say the least, an unforgettable character. This was a Newbery Honor Book; its sequel, A Year in Chicago, is also a recommended book and won the Newbery Medal.

Teaching Ideas:
Grandma's character is wonderfully drawn. Learners may want to make notes about her, her values, her motivations, etc. Lots of then-and-now discussions will also be possible. Because the children's view of their grandmother changes as they grow up, the book provides opportunity to tell the story from the point of view of different characters. This book would be a wonderful addition to a text set about the Depression, small town life, or grandparents.
