Summary: |
The Battle of Gettysburg (1863) is described from the perspectives of two actual participants, a 19-year-old Confederate lieutenant and a 17-year-old Union soldier. Events surrounding delivery of the Gettysburg Address are also described; several prominent Civil War figures' biographies are included. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This book will probably work best at the GED level. Telling the story from two perspectives works very well; it builds suspense and offers much for discussion. Biographical information about the others can stand alone or serve to complement the main text. Students may want to recreate the battle by using the details in the book. They may also want to conduct further research about this battle, other Civil War battles, or some of the people involved. With regard to people, a focus on personalities may prove particularly interesting. Map work will be effective. Fleischman's Bull Run would be an interesting companion text.
