Elvirey, her brother, grandmother, and father move to a log cabin in the Michigan woods after her mother dies. Granny's quilting scraps serve a greater purpose during a winter storm.

Teaching Ideas:
Because the characters are stereotypical, teachers may want to use this book in an easy reading text set on Westward Expansion along with Aurora Means Dawn, Dakota Dugout, The Wagon, and Dandelions, or in a text set on quilts. The use of dialect would be interesting read aloud. Students could discuss the roles and responsibilities of the children and compare with those of present day families.
