Summary:
Watercolor illustrations and ship diagrams enlarge the scope of this book about floating lighthouses and their crews. An author's note provides additional historical information about lightships.

Teaching Ideas:
Readers could keep an imaginary journal of a day on a lightship as one of the crew mentioned--helmsman, oiler, engineer, deckhand, fireman, radioman, messman or cook--or cat. Emerging readers can use the text and wonderful illustrations for vocabulary development. The mention in the Author's Note of a collision of the Olympic, sistership of the Titanic, with a lightship in 1934 is worthy of research and writing as is Light Vessel 87 at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City. Compare and contrast lightships to lighthouses.
