This is a reissue of a picture book biography of Langston Hughes (originally published in 1974). The illustrations and Author's Note (a must read) are new. |
Teaching Ideas: |
As with most Hughes biographies, Cleveland is featured. The Author's Note highlights Hughes's generosity with new writers; learners may want to consider the role of mentoring in the arts and other professions. Several examples of how Highes transformed life experiences into poetry would complement the writing curriculum. Hughes's relationship with his parents is addressed in this text as well and could prove an interesting focus for discussion or writing. The poem "Negro Speaks of Rivers" could be used for map study.
