Summary: |
This is the story of a 15-year-old girl who helped prevent a train disaster in 1881. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This is a beautiful and well written story of a strong and determined young woman, and the action section would be good material for a DR-TA. The map is a wonderful addition to the story and allows students to learn Midwest geography or do math and map computation. This book would fit in a unit on natural disasters (with Ballard's Titanic, Fisher's Kinderdike, and McCloskey's Time of Wonder) or in a unit on women heroines (with McCully's The Pirate Queen and Lawrence's Harriet and the Promised Land). |
