Teaching Ideas:
Teachers might ask students to think about the nature of change in their lifetimes and reflect on those things that endure and those that become obsolete. Readers may want to discuss why the author/illustrator changes his painting style during part of the story and what he accomplishes by doing so. They may also want to discuss why the Kamishibai Man wants to return to the city. Students interested in Japanese anime movies can talk about the similarities in style. The Houghton-Mifflin web site www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/booksellers/press_release/kamishibai/ gives historical background and explains the process of street storytelling. This web site and others provide extensive teaching ideas: www.indiana.edu/~japan/kamishibai/teachkam.html; and www.smith.edu/fcceas/curriculum/peet.htm.
