Summary:
An eight-year-old slave girl describes the preparations and customs for her sister's wedding on the plantation. The combination of hardships and vitality depicted in this book creates a strong sense of community and of extended family.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers may want to discuss celebrations and customs and how they have changed over time. Students may want to write responses to this book by telling about weddings they have attended or participated in. It may fit well in a unit on slavery or on African-American history.
