Summary:
The author weaves together historical fact and fiction in the story of a modern French girl who idolizes Joan of Arc. An historical map and beautiful illustrations enhance the stories.

Teaching Ideas:
The story is so compellingly told that teachers may want to read the book aloud, a chapter at a time. Readers/listeners will want to note the barriers that Joan overcame and the forces that caused her downfall. Creating a timeline while reading might help. Readers can compare and contrast this book with Diane Stanley's Joan of Arc. Using the author's notes in the endpapers, students could explore the combining of fact and fiction: 1) Compare some passage of Joan's dialogue with an historical account to see how close the author follows the historical document (her trial might be a good source); 2) Discuss how framing the historical story with a modern fictional story improves or does not improve upon the story of Joan of Arc; and 3) Discuss why the author introduces the sparrow as Joan's companion. Why the story of Joan of Arc continues to interest readers today would be a good topic for discussion.
