Summary: |
With his wonderfully bright, energetic illustrations, Myers gives an Mezo-American and African American spin to the famous poem by Lewis Carroll.
Myer's "reimagined" famous poem by Carroll is unique in its contemporary setting of an urban street basketball court. |
Teaching Ideas: |
What makes these illustrations so strong? Exploration of the relationship of the illustrations (recent) to the text (100 years old) using the back matter might help students gain a greater understanding of these elements of the book. Some students should enjoy telling or writing a story based on the illustrations. This activity could lead to a discussion on bullying. The nonsense words of Jabberwocky provide a wonderful opportunity to explore the meaning that sound gives to words and the associations among words. (Example: brillig and brilliant with the downer of the "g" sound. Readers might try to write their own nonsense poem.
Students can create their own words describing the action, emotions, characters or scenery in their writings. Creating new words give them an appreciation for established words. Have the students tell what the words mean and then look up already established words to match the meanings.
Teachers could use the nonsense words to help students work on decoding skills. |
